The audience of any form of media involve themselves in the consumption of it for a specific reason. For our short film our audience will want to watch it for several reasons. Firstly, the title of our film ‘Just Right’ already gives insight into what the film might be about, especially if they remember their fairy tales. Goldilocks is a very well known fairy-tale and the audience will have an existing idea as to what the story might be about and therefore they may watch our film to confirm their idea of the film, or out of excitement and curiosity - too see if it isn’t. We hope that our film doesn’t confirm anyone’s initial thoughts about it as we believe it is an original twist on the fairy tale, especially with setting as we don’t show any shots of the woods or the Bears’ cottage (what most people would assume would be included).
Secondly, they could watch it to be inspired to make their own film or develop a story of their own that could be along the same premise or idea of twisting a fairy tale. As our movie isn’t like the other twisted fairytales where they just re-enact the story but darker, it tells another story based on the aftermath or a fairy tale - its can inspire people to take stories further and think outside the box. We also create costumes and adapt hair and make-up in our movie, with this we rely heavily on lighting to enhance the tension and atmosphere and we’re using different cameras and settings (e.g a go-pro fish-eye setting) therefore our mis-en-scene could also encourage other film makers or artists to experiment with the look of their projects rather than relying on dialogue alone.
Our audience may also want to feel like they belong to a certain social group. As our film is based off an existing story, they need to know about the fairy tale if they’re going to understand aspects of our movie. If they know the details of the fairy tale and they watch our film, they would feel as if they’re ‘in the know' and get the ‘inside joke’ and therefore will feel included within the movie. This reason links with the reception theory, where the producers (Zoe and I) construct the text (our film) encoded with a meaning or message that we want to convey to the audience. In some instances the audience will correctly decode the message/meaning and understand what we’re trying to say. If they know the fairy tale, the message with correctly be decoded.
All of our reasons do all link with the Uses and Gratifications model audience theory, where the audience is active and the theory is emphasising what the audience do with the film and how and why they use it. The audience may want to be satisfied or challenged with the result of the film, or they may want to be inspired and learn from how we made the film and what its about - then using the information they learn from it.
